Balancing the Air in Your Home to Avoid Cold and Hot Spots – Part Two

Last month we focused on air balancing tips that you, as the homeowner, can accomplish in your house. However, you cannot perform every possible task. Some will need the assistance of a certified technician, such as the ones employed by Intagas. Here are some additional recommendations regarding air balancing in your home that you may want to consider.

Fix Your Ductwork

Problems with duct-work can cause major problems with airflow that result in uneven air distribution. If your duct system is out of balance you will find that some rooms are not cool enough while others are too warm. Items that your technician should inspect include:

  1. Fixing loose duct joints by refitting and sealing junctions
  2. Looking for sharp turns
  3. Insulating or sealing ducts

For many instances, sealing leaky spots in your ducts can remedy airflow problems. Sometimes installing additional return air ducts is necessary to balance the airflow in your home, especially if you have added rooms. Installing additional return duct can lower static pressure on the return side if your home is experiencing a bottleneck.

Check and Adjust the Blower’s Fan Speed

Changing the blower fan speed is an easy task for your Intagas technician. The adjustment on the speed involves adjusting the tension on the blower’s pulley. The blower can also easily get out of alignment, which can also affect the airflow. Rusted or jammed setscrews are other factors that can also affect airflow. A thorough inspection of your air con system by one of our technicians can often easily remedy your airflow problems through a minor adjustment.

Use Two Air Handlers

Sometimes a single air handler is not the best solution for your home’s cooling efficiency. Two handlers can significantly increase efficiency. Increased fan speed or booster fans for cooling operations can also help. Placing a second unit in the attic or in the ceiling above the uppermost floor can help considerably.

The Advantage of Air Balancing

Air balancing has a number of advantages beyond making your home more comfortable. These include:

  • Lower energy bills through optimised system performance
  • Longer lifespan for your air conditioning system
  • Healthier environment through better indoor air quality
  • Better humidity control
  • Equalised pressure
  • Helps prevent dirt and mould from clogging your system
  • Intagas can test your system to determine if your airflow needs adjusting. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.
